About Rowan

My Approach

I am an Integrative Child and Adolescent Psychotherapeutic Counsellor, trained at the University of Cambridge. I work in a person-centred way, drawing upon attachment theory and psychodynamic approaches.

Being an integrative practitioner means I am able draw on a range of psychotherapeutic theories, skills, and experiences, adapting the work to meet the unique needs of each young person. My priority is to offer a safe, containing, and empathetic space where children and adolescents can explore their thoughts and feelings at their own pace.

My Background

Before becoming a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor, I worked for over twenty years in primary education as a teacher across London and Cambridgeshire, in both mainstream and specialist settings. These experiences gave me a deep understanding of the emotional lives of children and adolescents, and the importance of having access to therapeutic support.

Creative Arts in Therapy

For many young people, words alone can feel limiting or they simply aren’t able to name a thought or feeling. Creative arts — such as drawing, painting, movement, or symbolic play — can offer a gentle and expressive way to communicate experiences that may be difficult to name. These approaches can help young people connect with their inner world in a way that feels natural, supported, and free from pressure. Using the creative arts can help young people to access the deeper feeling and meaning.

The Importance of Relationship

The therapeutic relationship is at the heart of meaningful change. I work alongside each young person with curiosity, steadiness, and compassion, offering a non‑judgemental space where they can reflect on what they are feeling in the here and now. My aim is to help them feel seen, heard, and understood.

Why Therapy Matters

Having a dedicated time and space outside of school and home — somewhere that is just for them — can be both empowering and restorative. Therapy offers young people a chance to pause, breathe, and make sense of whatever they may be facing, with someone alongside them who is steady, attuned, and fully present.

Professional Standards

I follow the UKCP Codes of Ethics and Professional Practice, hold an enhanced DBS, and have extensive safeguarding training. These foundations ensure that the therapeutic space is safe, ethical, and held with the utmost care.
